Post 6: In 2nd quarter, third graders have been learning all about the human body! Below is a video of a pig heart dissection, which we watched during the few weeks we studied the cardiovascular system.
3rd Grade Q1 - Post 5: This week in science lab, 3rd graders began tracking the growth of plants in the Learning Garden. Pairs of students spent time exploring the many sprouting plants, and chose one to track. The students marked their plant with a popsicle stick, and charted its location on a map. Then, they measured the height of their plants, counted its number of leaves, and estimate the its stage of growth. It'll be exciting to see how much they grow in one week!
3rd Grade Q1 - Post 4: This week in science lab, 3rd graders really put what they’ve learned about plants into practice! Each class planted a variety of vegetable seeds in the STS Learning Garden, and over the next several weeks the students will track growth and care for the plants. All students K-4 had a hand in planting, but 3rd graders will take the largest role in garden up-keep from here on. On their “planting day,” students first had an opportunity to taste the vegetable they would plant. Then we traveled from the lab to the garden, and each student had a chance to plant their own seeds. Click HERE to see pictures!
3rd Grade Q1 - Post 3: This week in science lab, third graders explored roots! With homeroom teachers, students learned that roots serve two purposes. First, they collect water and nutrients for the plant. Second, they provide support and structure for the plant. In lab, each student got to choose either a carrot, beet, baby beet, or radish. They measured their roots, made scientific drawings, and discovered that many roots are edible!
3rd Grade Q1 - Post 2: This week, third graders continued studying plants with an in-depth exploration of seeds! Students "dissected" a number of common fruits and vegetables, made observations, and counted the number of seeds in each. They were surprised at how many seeds were in some fruits and vegetables and how few were in others! Be on the look-out for their "scientific drawings" in Friday Folders!
3rd Grade Q1 - Post 1: On their first visit to the lab, third graders learned about the four factors needed for plant survival: soil, sunlight, air, and water. The students were given a "mystery bag" with all four components and had to determine what they were. Ask your third grader which two were the hardest to identify!
